Papaaloa Country Store & Cafe in Island of Hawaii

When I visited my friend in Papa'aloa, she took me to this place. This little store has been my friend's favorite, and I was looking forward to the experience. 1. Everyone at the store and restaurant was friendly and nice! 2. I had BBQ sandwich which was delicious!!3. The view from the patio was great! However, one thing I did not much care for... they used disposable container to serve their food... Silverware was not plastic, but the food was in 'composable' paper/cardboard container. I understand it is not a high end restaurant, but I expected to be decent. They can use a paper wrap and small basket to serve and present nicely. The island is trying to get away from plastics and disposables. So I wish this restaurant will consider that. That's why I gave 4 stars instead of 5.

This spot is a fun combination of country market + bar + restaurant. It's a hidden gem with great food (seared ahi poke bowl) with decent wine and beer options. We had a great time with friends who live in the neighborhood and took us there.Live music our second time there was a lively, local scene but a little too loud. Great fun and recommended nonetheless.

Awesome fresh caught fish by the owner/chef with an ocean view! The ono/wahoo sandwich & ahi poki bowl was delicious!

I had a chance to go and I love the pizza and shakes! My grandma lives nearby and speaks highly of them. It’s nice to know they treat her and other customers well.

Wow. Great food and atmosphere. This is in the middle of the Hamakua coast with local and other styles of freshly cooked food. Restaurant is in back of the store. They often have really great local music in the evening. Call ahead for a schedule. Nice space. Parking is sometimes limited. So park at the local buddhist temple just over the bridge if none is available in front of the restaurant.

Friendly service, and live music weekends in the cafe.

I have drove by this place many times and finally stopped. It became my favorite stop. The staff is really nice and friendly. Food has been good. Several months ago I had fish and chips that was over cooked and I had guests with me and I wanted to wow them. Which did not happen. I stopped again today; again staff was great, food was not. Had chicken katsu, which was very over cooked and hard to chew. Come on you are a great place, please do better.Fast forward; I have went back two more times and food and service has been great. Still love the place; it off path and the type that I really like. Great staff that is kind and attentive.

Hidden Gem, came recommended by our zip-line provider. GREAT burgers, garlic fries and desserts. Welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

This place is great. Been on island for 4 days and this is by far the best all around place we have eaten. Food is good, reasonably priced and the staff is super friendly and attentive. We happened to get there for dinner during an open mic nigh and got the last open table. Had a fun time while eating good food. It’s not the Ritz, but who wants to eat at the Ritz?

This place has good food and the most wonderful people working there. They can have my $$$ anytime.❤❤❤

Casual, overly modest place. Food, coffee, drinks, dessert are all excellent and very well made. Gorgeous view if you sit by the window.

Great stop after zip lining. The ice cream sandwich cookies were fantastic. Reasonable prices and clean restrooms. Very much worth the stop.

Fantastic little spot. Not just a good general store but also has a great restaurant. Friendly fast service. We had the poke bowl and fish tacos and both were excellent. They had a coconut mai tai on special that was the best I've ever had. Great prices, super fresh Ahi tuna. Restaurant looks over cliffs to the water. If we come back to the island for a second visit, we'll definitely be heading back to this little gem.

Incredible food. The iced chai latte was the best I've had. Got a breakfast burrito, fish tacos and gravy fries. Prices are very reasonable. Was here in the morning so didn't fully enjoy the bar but the food gets 5 stars.

Came here on a Friday night after a long day at Waipio Valley. Love the fish and chips and the live band that was playing. The staff was friendly, wait time was reasonable, and the place was clean but they didn’t have much for seating. Definitely will go back!

If staying anywhere near Laupahoehoe, or happen to head north out of Hilo, do yourself a favor and drop by this great little country store and cafe. The store staff is friendly, the local wait staff in the cafe are great. The live music at night adds to the friendly ambiance of the place, and we just couldn't drive by without finding another reason to drop in! Just another one of those hidden gems on Hawaii.

A country grocery, liquor store with a good restaurant featuring local and mainland standards - including pizza. Excellent food stock for a small grocery including fresh vegetables. Dozens of drink choices. Includes many organic and health-conscious food and drink selections. Good liquor selection. Often has live music - call to find out who, what and when. Kitchen is both take-out and dine-in. Good dessert selection.

I'm on vacation, and this place was the first spot to have good food and Tapatio on the whole island. The staff is super friendly and real, not that fake charm you get at resorts. The view is amazing here too.

We loved this quaint little place. It is not fancy but clean and had a nice small town feel. The food was good, fresh and reasonable. The fresh grilled fish sandwich was delicious and my husband liked the fish tacos. The sit down bar/restaurant had live music playing (not too loud) making the evening very enjoyable. The cocktails were good sized and tasty as well. The restaurant is on the opposite side of building from the store and take out window which we did not realize it even existed. The staff was very friendly and gave good service.

Such an awesome local place for good sit down food or snacks and gifts to go. Well done. Super aloha staff

Old Hawaii charm, great pizzas, burgers, fish and chips and baked goods. Best place to get propane if you live between here and Hilo.

Would never have found except for the ev charging station. Now it's a destination.

Small town, big heart. This has great food, including locally grown/farmed and a great restaurant with great service. Music on occasions- and if there's Ulu Poke Nachos - get 'em. So good.

I paid like $11 for a hamburger and some coleslaw and they served it to me in paper boats and then asked if I would need a fork....no ma'am I'm just going to eat at this coleslaw with my hands. If you're going to pretend to serve food then go the extra mile and give people proper utensils. Thanks.

We've always gotten delicious food here - and with the expanded cafe there's room for more. Love the smoothies & pastry, love the fish & chips, good specials and always a nice selection, friendly staff.

Great people! Very inviting and talkative. Checked out the new cafe too which for the most part great food and atmosphere - their mushrooms are amazingCons: prices are very expensive in the store but given distance from Hilo, understandable. Cafe - the stir fry is maybe something they need to either remove from menu, or find a better recipe.

My husband and I shared a tri-tip sandwich it was fantastic. The mac salad was very very good. And the green salad with the Greek dressing was delicious.

Love this place! Pretty much everything I’ve had here is delicious- the poke bowl is so good it sells out often. Burgers are made with quality meat, gluten free pizza is some of the best I’ve had. Some of the pastries are a little dry but the rest of the food more than makes up for it. Prices are so reasonable too. The store is convenient for when you don’t want to run to Hilo for just a few things. I just wish they were open on sundays =\

Great store and great restaurant. We came on a Friday night and had the opportunity to enjoy live music and good food. We were so impressed we came back the next morning for breakfast burritos and supplies before taking off on the road. Highly recommend for a pit stop, but if you can stay for a meal.

The store area is nice and we'll stocked. The folks working there were very friendly, would definitely come back.

Every meal I've had here has been excellent. The cost of the items in the grocery store are very reasonable as well.

Best loco moco and poke bowl on the island by far.. and we've tried them all. A must stop if you're visiting. Friendly, welcoming staff AND they have damn good pizza! Also a great grocery selection with fresh local produce. Like I said, a must stop!

Possibly the best meal I have eaten in the last year. My husband and I decided to come here for lunch after a few other places we stopped at really only offered smoothies or vegetarian food... I had the chicken Katsu and my husband had the fish and chips which was ono for the day. I can’t rave enough about my chicken. It was breaded in panko and fried perfectly, juicy and crispy! The katsu sauce was delicious. My husband wanted my meal after he tried it! But his fried ono was delicious and the fries were flavorful. The potato salad that came with my chicken was amazing. The flavor was spot on! If we are on this side of the island again during our trip we’ll stop in again!

The poke bowl is absolutely perfect, and the pizza is very good. The music is generally very good, and the woman running the place is a treat to chat with, if you catch her when she's not busy. Good beer, and while the spirits selection is modest, they have some fun mixed drinks on the menu.
